This is a lovely example of a young Rutherglen Muscat, full of vibrant candied peel flavours and lifted aromas of rose petal and musk. It is a blend of 3 to 5 year old stocks, with a dash of much older material for extra depth.
Made from Muscat a Petits Grains Rouge, known somewhat more pronouncably as Brown Muscat here in Rutherglen. We are lucky to have gorgeous old blocks of the vines, going back to the 1920s.
The fruit is allowed to become very ripe on the vine before harvest. It is picked and crushed, then macerated for 1 to 3 days. The must is pressed and the juice is fortified with spirit to 18%. The new wine is then run to barrel where it matures, sometimes for many years. The Rutherglen Muscat is a blend of wines of a variety of ages. The younger material provides freshness and aromatic lift, whereas the older parts of the blend give wonderful depth and complexity.
Often the older wines seem too heavy for matching with deserts; on the contrary, young fresh Muscat is a perfect desert wine. The fresh fruit flavours and spicy aromatic lift are perfect for teaming up with all sorts of naughty treats.
