Tasting Notes

Alias II is a blend of Shiraz with the addition of five percent Muscadelle, the grape from which Australian Tokay is made. The inclusion of a small percentage of white grapes makes a subtle contribution to the wine; the tannin and colour of the wine are intensified and the flavours and aromas of the wine are rounded out. Documents dating from the early 1900s tell us a similar blend was made at All Saints Estate at the time.

Viticulture Notes

The pairing of a small amount of white juice with Shiraz is nothing new; Shiraz Viognier was once only found in the Northern Rhône Valley region of Côte-Rôtie. Now it has become a popular blend all over the world.

Winemaking Notes

Like the very best Rhône reds, we picked and fermented both varieties together in our original open fermenting tanks, hand plunged the cap and pressed-off the wine in our 1873 vintage basket press. Towards the end of the fermentation, a small amount was run off to new oak, with the rest given a lengthy post-ferment maceration. The wine was aged in small French oak barrels for 12 months.

Food Matches

Alias II is and ideal partner to red meat and game dishes.

All Saints Estate 2007 Alias II (Shiraz Muscadelle) awarded one of Winestate's Best Wines of 2010
"Nose a medley of chocolate and plums. Long, intense brooding palate, with the fruit hidden behind the tannins and oak for now. Cellar 3-5 years. $35."
